Yampolsky, Izrail (Markovich)

Yampolsky, Izrail (Markovich), Russian musicologist and lexicographer, nephew of Abram (Ilyich) Yampolsky; b. Kiev, Nov. 21, 1905; d. Moscow, Sept. 20, 1976. He studied violin with his uncle, then entered the Moscow Cons., where he took courses in advanced theory with Miaskovsky and Gliere; he subsequently taught violin at the Music Academy in Moscow (1931-58); gave lectures in music history there; also taught at the Cons. (1934-49). A fine and diligent research scholar, he publ. a number of excellent monographs dealing mainly with violin and violinists: on the foundations of violin fingering (Moscow, 1933; 3rd expanded ed., 1955; Eng. tr., London, 1967); Henryk Wieniawski (Moscow, 1955); Enescu (Moscow, 1956; also in Romanian, Bucharest, 1959); on the music of Yugoslavia (Moscow, 1958); Paganini (Moscow, 1961; 2nd ed., 1968); David Oistrakh (Moscow, 1964); Fritz Kreisler (1975)..
