Zagrosek, Lothar

Zagrosek, Lothar, German conductor; b. Waging, Nov. 13,1942. After training in Munich and at the Essen Folkwangschule, he studied conducting with Swa-rowsky in Vienna, and also received guidance from Karajan, Kertesz, and Maderna. In 1967 he began his career, conducting opera in Salzburg, Kiel, and Darmstadt. In 1972 he became conductor in Solingen. He made his first appearance at the Salzburg Festival in 1973 conducting the Mozarteum Orch. In 1977 he became Generalmusikdirektor in Mönchengladbach. From 1978 he made frequent guest conducting appearances with the London Sinfonietta, establishing a fine reputation as an interpretor of contemporary music. From 1982 to 1987 he was chief conductor of the Austrian Radio Sym. Orch. in Vienna. He made appearances as a guest conductor in the U.S. from 1984. From 1986 to 1989 he was music director of the Paris Opéra. In 1987 he conducted Così fan tutti at the Glyndebourne Festival. He appeared with the English National Opera in London in 1989 conducting Die Zauberflöte. From 1990 to 1993 he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Leipzig Opera. He was Generalmusikdirektor of the Stuttgart Opera from 1998.
