Zehetmair, Thomas, Austrian violinist; b. Salzburg, Nov. 23, 1961. His parents were violinists. After demonstrating prodigious talent, he studied with his father, Helmut Zehetmair, and with Franz Samohyl at the Salzburg Mozarteum. He was still a small child when he began to appear in public; later pursued advanced training with Max Rostal and Nathan Mil-stein. After winning 1st prize in the Mozart competition in 1978, he scored a major success with his first appearance at Vienna’s Musikverein. He subsequently was engaged as a soloist with leading European and U.S. orchs.; also appeared as a recitalist and chamber music player in a catholic repertoire ranging from early music to contemporary scores.
