SIDELIGHTS: Edd Applegate once told CA: "I write about individuals who have played major roles in advertising and journalism. Consequently, I have to spend countless hours tracking pieces of information in numerous sources. Nonetheless, I find the process of trying to put one's life together from these pieces (sometimes scraps) both interesting and tiring. I enjoy researching and writing, and perhaps one or more books that I have edited or written has helped someone, say a student at a college or university, to write a paper for a class assignment."
More recently he added: "I started writing fiction in high school, after I had read numerous novels and issues of Writer's Digest. Although I wrote several novellas and several short stories and poems, none of the novellas were published, though some of the short stories and poems appeared in a few literary magazines."
"My interest in writing nonfiction grew when I was a graduate student. Most of my nonfiction work is scholarly in nature; that is, for students enrolled in colleges and universities and for those who teach advertising or journalism. The Ad Men and Women: A Biographical Dictionary of Advertising and Personalities and Products: A Historical Perspective on Advertising in America examine the early 'greats'—those who created advertising and at the same time built major agencies and companies bearing their names. Strategic Copywriting: How to Create Effective Advertising is a textbook primarily for students enrolled in advertising copywriting or similar courses, although it is suitable for anyone who wishes to learn how to write and design ads. Print and Broadcast Journalism: A Critical Examination covered the newspaper and broadcast (especially television) industries. Literary Journalism: A Biographical Dictionary of Writers and Editors and Journalistic Advocates and Muckrakers: Three Centuries of Crusading Writers looked at those who wrote literary journalism or published literary journalism magazines and those who wrote advocacy or muckraking journal ism or published advocacy or muckraking journalism magazines."
