SIDELIGHTS: Photographer and writer Jane Burton focuses her talents on books that appeal to youthful audiences, from prereaders through elementary school-aged youngsters. Her topics include the habits of favorite animals such as dogs, cats, horses, and frogs; the picture book Egg: A Photographic Story of Hatching covers not just chickens but a variety of creatures who emerge from shells. Praising the author's work, Booklist contributor Julie Corsaro singled out Burton's "excellent, close-up photographs" that are combined with "delicate line drawings."

Primarily a photographer, Burton produces work that often appears in books written by others, sometimes by her husband, biologist/photographer Kim Taylor. Burton once told CA: "I am only persuaded to write if, by wrapping a text around them, a batch of photographs will be most readily sold." However, she more recently remarked: "Now that I am writing children's books about real animals, I find I thoroughly enjoy the writing, almost as much as the photography!"
