SIDELIGHTS:
Lloyd Clark is a senior lecturer in war studies at Great Britain's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and he has lectured on military history around the world. His special interests are the Western Front of the First World War, the Mediterranean Front of the Second World War, and airborne warfare. In his book Arnhem: Operation Market Garden, September 1944, he reviewed the unsuccessful attempt made by Allied forces to take control of the most important bridges in Belgium. Using many illustrations from military archives, Clark details the planning of the operation and then gives a chronological account of what actually happened as the weeks unfolded. He follows up by explaining the costs of the Allies' failure to make the plan work, including captured troops and retribution by the Germans. A writer for the Contemporary Review stated that in Arnhem, Clark explains the campaign and its failure clearly, and in so doing, clears the military leaders from charges of incompetence, even demonstrating that in some ways, they did achieve a measure of success. "This is now the best discussion of this complicated and controversial episode," concluded the reviewer.
In Anzio: Italy and the Battle for Rome, 1944, Clark takes an in-depth look at the complexities of the Allied invasion of Italy. The first wave of Allies invaded in September, 1943, but was quickly rendered ineffective by various factors. In January of the following year, two more Allied divisions invaded the country at Anzio, where they were initially met with little resistance. Yet within a few days, German forces arrived and some of the bloodiest fighting of the war commenced. "Clark delivers an absorbing account of the terrible battle," commented a Publishers Weekly reviewer. A Kirkus Reviews contributor noted that Clark's account does a great deal to negate the common misconception that the Italian campaign was "a sideshow," and added that the book is "highly readable." The author's grasp of the situation was also praised by Gilbert Taylor in Booklist, who commented on Clark's ability to understand the plans of the generals involved and the reality of fighting in the trenches. "Clark integrates all aspects of Anzio in this high-quality battle history," concluded Taylor.
