Clark, John (Trevor)

Clark, John (Trevor), jazz french hornist; b. Brooklyn, N.Y., Sept. 21, 1944. Clark grew up mostly in Rochester, N.Y., studied composition and arranging at New England Cons, with George Russell, Jaki Byard and Ran Blake, and was a member of the Scholarship Brass Quintet. He was a member of the Gil Evans Orch, (1974–88), recording six albums. He has also performed with a wide range of groups including Leroy Jenkins, Speculum Musicae, McCoy Tyner, Carla Bley, George Russell and Joe Lovano. In 1982, he was winner of the Down Beat Critics’ Poll, and in 1986 received the NARAS Award for Most Valuable Player in the recording field. His compositions and arrangements have been performed and/or recorded by The Pugh-Taylor Project, The Aspen Wind Quintet, The Meridian Arts Ensemble, the McCoy Tyner Big Band, the Gil Evans Orch. and the Mohawk Trail Concerts (Mass.).
