In his novel Dark Rain, Conor Corderoy presents a science fiction story in which the Earth's environment has been destroyed. Plagued by continuous rain, the Earth's inhabitants are divided into two groups. The super rich live in domes protected from the rain and the incessant crime outside. The rest of humanity must struggle with the constant downpour. These unfortunate people are also separated into two groups: the Wets and the Drys, with the Wets constantly exposed to the Earth's inhospitable environment as they live in shanties, and the Drys living a little better in stable structures with roofs. When biochemist William Keyhoe is murdered in one of the domes by having his heart cut out while he is still alive, Inspector O'Neil begins a probe. When he gets too close to the truth, he is fired. Undeterred, O'Neil stays on the grisly case and soon confronts a complex plot involving enemy aliens and giant genetic clones. "The novel is told from O'Neil's point-of-view, and he loves to nudge us into acknowledging what a bad dude he is," noted a contributor to Kirkus Reviews. Grumpy Old Bookman critic Michael Allen referred to Dark Rain as "a traditional PI book, with variations," adding in the same review: "I found it eminently readable."
