An advocate for the fostering of spiritual traditions within the family unit, Mimi Doe received her master's degree in education from Harvard University. She often speaks before parenting groups, churches, and educational and professional groups, and has appeared on a number of television programs, including the Oprah Winfrey Show.
With Marsha Walch—a Mississippi psychotherapist who also happens to be Doe's mother—Doe wrote Ten Principles for Spiritual Parenting: Nurturing Your Child's Soul. These principles, each the subject of a chapter, include "Know That God Cares for You," "Listen to Your Child," "Add Magic to the Ordinary," and "Make Each Day a New Beginning." According to Doe and Walch, as quoted by Diego Ribadeneira in the Boston Globe, "Spirituality is the base from which grow self-esteem, values, morals, a sense of belonging." A reviewer for Publishers Weekly noted that "many of the ideas here are worth trying" but added that "the authors' approach is sentimental and oversimplified." Doe's Busy but Balanced: Practical and Inspirational Ways to Create a Calmer, Closer Family offers tips geared to particular seasons and months of the year.
