SIDELIGHTS: Mary L. Emmons told CA: "I love words and reading. Encouragement from friends and family influences me as I have never had a mentor, but membership in a critique group of Pennwriters.org has helped a lot. I begin with a question, 'What if?,' and look at plot potential. If it's there then I look for the ending first, then the characters. Then I write the first chapter, which is usually redone several times. As I work, I list clues, red herrings, and other questions for future reference. I edit and proof as I write so when I'm finished the work is considered done. Using lists, I make sure all loose ends are tied off. Generally, by the halfway point the rest is merely following the plot to natural conclusions, often not the original ending planned. I like surprises and never outline." Emmons, who published her first novel under the pseudonym Anne K. Edwards, lives on a small farm in eastern Pennsylvania.
