SIDELIGHTS:
Eva Golinger is a lawyer who has written about the relationship between Venezuela and the United States. In The Chavez Code: Cracking U.S. Intervention in Venezuela, the author relies on information she obtained from the U.S. Freedom of Information Act to outline how the United States and President George W. Bush and his administration had prior knowledge of an alleged plot to overthrow Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who has been an outspoken critic of the United States and Bush in particular. Golinger's book raised controversy, with some accusing the author of being an apologist for Chavez and others pointing out that the U.S. intervention was essentially both illegal and hypocritical. Boyd Childress, writing in the Library Journal, commented that The Chavez Code "is important reading if only because it presents an alternate view regarding America's attempts to influence regional politics and economics." Writing on Politicalaffairs.net, Joel Wendland wrote: "Eva Golinger's outstanding investigation and documentation of the events of early April 2002 that led to the illegal coup against President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is a must read." Wendland also noted: "Golinger's book is a fast-paced read with reams of documents."
Golinger again focuses on the antagonistic relationship between the leaders of the United States and Venezuela in Bush vs. Chavez: Washington's War against Venezuela. Once again, the author accuses U.S. government officials and agencies of interfering with Venezuelan politics. Michael Fox, writing on Venezuelanalysis. com, noted that the book "deals with various issues including a well-established US media campaign, espionage, sabotage, and psychological war against Venezuela." Fox also wrote: "Noam Chomsky recently declared Bush vs. Chavez, ‘invaluable’ and described the book as ‘an essential read to understanding the conflict between the United States and Venezuela.’"
