SIDELIGHTS: Loek Koopmans told CA:“Writing and illustrating picture books is important. These books help very young children to develop as adults. They also provide the author or illustrator with a very special responsibility. A picture book illustrator has to be conscious of the power and influence he has on children. He has to study the nature of children and search for or subscribe to opinions on the development of children into adults. This is the way a picture book illustrator can develop his own style.

“My writing and illustrating process started at the most important point of life: the universe and the sun—the source of all life! In my work the sunlight is never absent, but there is no sun without clouds because clouds are the creation of the sun itself. Light and dark are inseparable, and so are good and evil. So are fairy tales: they contain eternal truth.”
