SIDELIGHTS:

Stephen LaFevers is a nurse who has also written science fiction. In The Last Guardian, the author tells the story of a dimwitted but goodhearted Alaskan named Sunny who becomes a Guardian whenever he wears a certain piece of jewelry. The Guardians are focused on protecting the Gates that connect various universes, one of which encompasses the Earth. Sunny eventually finds himself in a battle with Lord Grimm, who wants to keep the Gates open, which ultimately would lead to disaster. Writing on the B-independent.com Web site, Mike Purfield commented, "LaFevers seems to capture something that is hard to do. He created an unpretentious fantasy story that doesn't alienate the reader."

In his second novel, Dreams of April Ten, LaFevers features a story encompassing people who undergo spontaneous human combustion and the tale of two men who are dreaming of a woman named April Ten. When the two men set out to find the woman of their dreams, who appears to be real to them, they eventually encounter each other. They thus discover that their lives are not what they thought they were and that April Ten might be part of a disastrous experiment. A Euro Reviews Web site contributor called Dreams of April Ten "a very special thriller." Writing again for B-independent.com, Purfield wrote that the novel "is an entertaining and carefully plotted mystery."

LaFevers told CA: "Since childhood I have enjoyed science fiction books and movies, even second-rate ones. I collect and enjoy old movie serials, and many of them are science fiction or fantasy. One of my favorite reads was When Worlds Collide. So it is understandable that I tend to write fantastic stories or stories about fantastic events or people. My thirty-year history in healthcare and hypnosis make it natural that my work leans toward the medical thriller."
