SIDELIGHTS: Cynthia M. Little began writing poems about love and relationships in middle school and has written off and on throughout her life as a wife, mother, and real estate agent. She decided to write her first book, Life Lessons before "I Do": Things I Wish I Knew!, as a gift to her eldest daughter. Gathering together advice from family, friends, and others who have parented, Little writes primarily about relationships, love, and marriage, grounding her advice in true stories. In the book, she explores such issues as the need to discuss having children, knowing your partner's sexual history, and even finding out about your future mate's credit history. The author also discusses sexual relations within the marriage and the need to make sure that a person makes time for oneself, as well as for the family. In addition to touching upon such delicate topics as sexually transmitted diseases, Little includes advice on how spouses can hold on to their individual dreams.
In a review for the Small Press Bookwatch, a contributor called Life Lessons before "I Do" a "must-read" for people in serious relationships and noted that while the advice is primarily written for the future wife, it can also apply to the future husband as well. The reviewer went on to call Little's book "a singularly valuable read and a highly recommended fortification against failing to think things through." Bonnie Poquette, writing in the Library Journal, noted, "Without being didactic, she writes candidly and uses appropriate facts and anecdotes to support her statements."
