One of thirteen children raised by a poor sharecropper in Depression-Era Texas, Joe Massengale managed to learn some tough lessons about character and determinedness from his father. While still a teenager, he took what he learned and moved to California. There, in 1947, he founded his own landscaping business, and through decades of hard work developed it into a multimillion dollar venture. In his book Six Lessons for Six Sons: An Extraordinary Father, a Simple Formula for Success, written with David Clow, Massengale tells his story to his sons, and his readers, sharing with them the lessons he has learned. A Publishers Weekly contributor considered Six Lessons for Six Sons a valuable book that offers "inspiring" reading. Seattle Medium writer Terri Schlichenmeyer also asserted that Massengale's book is "more than just six simple tenets for a good life"; it contains "dozens of ingredients for success." The reviewer concluded, "This book will inspire even the most hard-hearted reader."
