SIDELIGHTS: Fiona McIntosh is the author of the "Trinity" and "Quickening" fantasy trilogies. In an interview with Debbie Ledesma on the Suite101.com, the author described her first trilogy as "the tale of a man's journey to discover his true identity and the reason for his strange, undetectable powers in a time when Inquisitors are roaming the … land." The trilogy revolves around Tor, who discovers his healing abilities and other powers while battling the powerful Orlac. In the first book, Betrayal. Tor leaves his love behind to become an apprentice to Merkhud and embarks on a journey to discovery his destiny. In Revenge, Tor has been saved from death by Merkhud and goes into hiding. His lover, Alyssa, thinks he is dead. With a falcon and a spirit named Yargo, Tor continues to battle Orlac, searching for the Trinity even though he does not know who or what the Trinity is. In Destiny Tor discovers the Trinity at last and has his final confrontation with Orlac.

In the "Quickening" trilogy, McIntosh creates a new series featuring General Wyl Thirsk. In the first book, Myrren's Gift, Thirsk undergoes the Quickening when he witnesses Myrren's torture and murder for being a witch at the hands of Thirsk's arch enemy, Celimus. Eventually, Celimus banishes Thirsk along with a mercenary named Romen Koreldy, whose later battles with Thirsk reveals Thirsk's new powers. In a review of Myrren's Gift for Library Journal, Jackie Cassada wrote that the book "establishes McIntosh as a talented storyteller with the ability to create strong characters and a compelling plot." A Publishers Weekly contributor called the first installment "gripping." The trilogy continues with Blood & Memory, as Thirsk searches for a way to break the Quickening and win his love. The final installment, Bridge of Souls, finds Thirsk seeking to shape his own destiny rather than the one guided by the Quickening as he continues to battle Celimus.
