OBITUARY NOTICE— See index for CA sketch: Born January 29, 1915, in Cleveland, OH; died of pneumonia January 15, 2005, in Cleveland, OH. Educator, musician, and author. Miller was former head of the music department at the Cleveland Institute of Music and a professor at John Carroll University. He earned his bachelor's degree in piano from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1936, followed by a master's degree the next year in music theory. In 1942 he also completed an M.A. at what is now Case Western Reserve University. Miller's teaching career began at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he was an instructor in music theory from 1937 until 1950. He then headed the department of music history from 1951 until 1965, and was dean from 1955 until 1965. In 1966 he joined the John Carroll University faculty as a professor of music, retiring in 1979. In addition to his teaching, Miller translated a number of books on music, including Franchinus Gaffurius's Practica Musicae (1968), Sebald Heyden's De arte canendi (1972), and Bartolomeo Ramis de Pareia's Musica practica (1993).
