Sidelights

Edward Miller, a freelance illustrator based in New York City, has created digitally based art for picture-book texts by noted nonfiction authors such as Paul Showers, David A. Adler, and Franklyn Branley. Appraising Adler's You Can, Toucan, Math: Word Problem-solving Fun, a Kirkus Reviews contributor wrote that "Miller's illustrations keep the details simple so that children can use [his] … pictures to help them solve the problems." Several of the books Miller has illustrated for Showers and Branley are updated versions of favorite texts, such as The Sun: Our Nearest Star, which Booklist reviewer Carolyn Phelan dubbed "a handsome new edition" featuring "pleasing" computer-generated cartoon art. Miller's illustrations for Boats on the River "more than make up" for a sometimes-confusing text, according to Gillian Engberg in another Booklist review. In addition to book illustration, Miller has also produced greeting cards for the Museum of Modern Art.

Miller's first original, self-illustrated story, Elf Elementary, finds a young elf named Franklin looking forward to his first day at elementary elf school, where he will study Christmas traditions and learn skills—learning how to deal with fireplace soot, for example—useful to a future Santa's helper. A more generally useful skill set is the focus of The Monster Health Book: A Guide to Eating Healthy, Being Active, and Feeling Great for Monsters and Kids!, in which a jolly green monster introduces healthy-body-building basics. In a Publishers Weekly review of Elf Elementary a critic noted the "graphically crisp" images Miller pairs with his holiday story. Chock full of silliness, The Monster Health Book was praised by School Library Journal reviewer Lee Bock as a "lively" and "visually appealing" picture book that "belongs in children's hands" due to its valuable subject matter.

Miller continues to entertain young readers in Captain Barnacle's Aquarium. Here an elderly swashbuckling pirate with a parrot perched on his shoulder acts as tour guide to a group of young students visiting a marine aquarium. In colorful and informative prose, the old salt describes how he sailed the seven seas, was captured and then escaped from ruthless pirates, and ultimately decided to use his pirate treasure to build an aquarium to house all the amazing sea creatures he has discovered. Miller mixes the pirate's colorful story with facts about ocean-dwelling creatures, and ends his book with a glossary of pirate terms. Reviewing Captain Barnacle's Aquarium for School Library Journal, Debbie Stewart Hoskins wrote that Miller's "brightly colored, graphic-style" art serves as a captivating "introduction to … the riches of the sea."
