SIDELIGHTS: Glenn W. Miller told CA: "I am an award-winning and internationally exhibited Australian artist who also enjoys writing. My writing began in my early twenties when I researched my grandmother's life. I eventually wrote a nonfiction account of the struggles faced by my grandmother and grandfather (who died before I was born) in settling a large cattle property during the Great Depression. The book also told the history of the entire area. This book was self-published and sold among the family and in the town central to the district.
"My primary motivation for writing is my passion for reading and creating. My head is always full of images and stories. My biggest influences in writing are other authors, my favorite being James Dickey. I first read Deliverance when I was fourteen, and was so mesmerised by the writing style and the story that I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I was inspired to write Cry the Night in reaction to a disturbing true story. I watched the news on television one night several years ago and saw that an old man in his sixties had just been arrested for the double murder of two young children whose bodies were found in a dry creek bed near the town where I was living when attending school some twenty-five years earlier. The children were aged five and eleven. This murder was the most sorrowful incident in the town's history."
