SIDELIGHTS: Don Nardo is a former high school teacher whose expertise in history, especially ancient and classical history, resulted in a successful career as a freelance historian and author of nonfiction for young readers. He has written about ancient civilizations for a number of series, focusing particularly on the figures, cultures, mythology, and architecture of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Nardo has also written books for other series that focus on subjects that include history, science, and literature.
Teaching History critic Tia M. Kolbaba reviewed The Rise of Christianity, edited by Nardo for the popular "Turning Points in World History" series, noting that "the essays in the volume are accessible; some of them are classics. They are abridged without being violated. Words, names, and ideas that might not be known to students are thoroughly and thoughtfully glossed. The primary sources are also well-chosen to document points made in the essays." Another book in the series, The Great Depression, contains essays by scholars who address such issues as rural poverty, migration, drought, and the struggles of American blacks. Teaching History contributor David Blanke felt that the writing and research in The French Revolution "are absolutely first-rate. Combining selections from classic works with newer pieces gives the volume a balance in coverage and eases the historiographical bias that is present in other anthologies."
Women of Ancient Rome is a volume in the "Women in History" series. Here, Nardo looks at the lives of both Roman slaves and aristocrats and their roles as mothers and wives, but also their lives outside the home. Among other interesting facts, he notes that Roman women often did not mind their husband's having sex with slaves, because it allowed the wives to space their pregnancies. Booklist reviewer Ilene Cooper called the volume a "terrific example of how good series nonfiction can be."
Nardo also edited several volumes in the "Great Medical Discoveries" series. Carolyn Phelan reviewed Cloning and Vaccines in Booklist, calling them "thoughtful, well-researched books." Cloning discusses plants cloned naturally and in agriculture, then moves on to the cloning of animals, beginning with Dolly the sheep in 1996. The book represents the challenges of this science, both biologically and ethically. In Vaccines Nardo provides a history of the earliest vaccines and the practices of ancient healers, and he studies the breakthroughs of such pioneers as Louis Pasteur and Jonas Salk, among others. He also discusses the search for vaccines for AIDS and cancer, the difference between live and killed vaccine, and the diseases that have been nearly eliminated because of vaccines, including polio and smallpox.
Another popular series to which Nardo has contributed is the "Eyes on the Sky" series of astronomy books for children. School Library Journal writer Jonathan Betz-Zall reviewed two of the books in this series, Black Holes and The Moon, commenting that Nardo "provides just the right mix of history, mystery, and scientific fact to pull readers in and send them looking for more."
Two of Nardo's books from the "Heroes and Villains" series were reviewed by John Green in Booklist. In commenting on Hitler and King Arthur, Green said that "engaging writing coupled with the collection of quotations make these good resources." In the former, Nardo chronicles German chancellor Adolf Hitler's rise to power. Green noted, however, that this book is "as subjective in its disgust as King Arthur is in its praise. Nardo first addresses the question of whether Arthur even existed, and, if he did, who he was; then he goes on to discuss other figures of the Arthurian saga, including the wizard Merlin.
Nardo has contributed a number of titles to the "The History of Weapons and Warfare" series. School Library Journal critic David Pauli reviewed Ancient Egypt, noting that Nardo covers the period until that point in history when Egypt was conquered by Alexander the Great. Pauli wrote that Nardo's documentation of the Battle of Kadesh "is a centerpiece of the book because it is one of the first battles recorded by history."
The Declaration of Independence is one of many titles Nardo wrote for the "History of the World" series. Here, the author studies the Stamp Act, Boston Tea Party, and other events that led to the signing of this historical document. School Library Journal critic Michele Shaw felt that the information contained in the title "is adequate," but added that it would have benefited from the addition of a time line.
The "Understanding Great Literature" series contains contributions Nardo that include Understanding Hamlet and Understanding Frankenstein. He has also penned many titles for the "Lucent Library of Historical Eras" series and a number for the "Life during the Great Civilizations" series, including Ancient Persia. Cooper noted that the books in the last-mentioned series cover not only housing, jobs, clothing, and the society of the times, but also "more sticky" subjects like religion. The Booklist cricic also noted that Nardo admits that writing about Persia can be difficult, since little is known about the lives of ordinary people from that time and place; most available information concerns the upper classes. "Even with this caveat," commented Cooper, "Nardo is able to enlighten readers about Persian society and the different ways of life."
