SIDELIGHTS: Paul Stillwell's Air Raid: Pearl Harbor! is a collection of forty-seven memoirs. The book includes an article by the Japanese pilot who led the attack in 1945. Other contributors are American and Japanese officers and enlisted personnel, civilians, both men and women, and professional journalists. The work is heavily illustrated with photographs, which were described thus in the Washington Post Book World by Roger Pineau: "Some [are] familiar, some rare, but all well chosen and arranged. Finding Pearl Harbor-vintage photographs of all forty-seven authors was a nice touch and no mean task." Clay Blair of the Chicago Tribune found Air Raid to be "provocative, informative, nicely balanced between Big and Little Picture. In its own highly personal and subjective way it gives a full account of what happened."
Stillwell once told CA: "My service in the crew of the USS New Jersey in 1969 led to an interest in battleships and their history. This was reflected in Battleship New Jersey: An Illustrated History. I did a great deal of documentary research to form the factual skeleton for the story, but the real flesh and blood came in the words of other former crew members. I conducted oral history interviews with more than 100 of them and thus was able to tell the human side of the story of this great ship. I planned a similar approach in writing about the battleship Arizona. Because of her loss at the hands of the Japanese on December 7, 1941, she became one of the most famous U.S. Navy ships. Curiously, though, little has been written about her twenty-five years of active service prior to World War II. By interviewing former Arizona men, I wanted to bring her story to life, as I did with the New Jersey."
