STONEMAN, Elvyn Arthur 1919-2002
OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born November 5, 1919, in Lincoln, NE; died of complications from diabetes February 19, 2002, in Rockville, MD. Geographer, educator, foreign service officer, and author. For a few years after the end of World War II, Stoneman taught geography at Indiana University in Bloomington. He then worked as a geographer, first for the U.S. Department of Defense from 1951 to 1960, then for the Department of State, beginning in 1960. His foreign service assignments took him to South Africa for a brief period, but the bulk of his career was spent in Washington, D.C., where he retired in 1979. Stoneman was a coauthor of the books The Changing Map of Africa and A Handbook of New Nations.
