SIDELIGHTS: A distinguished dance critic, Tobi Tobias has also written a number of books for children. Among her children's titles are A World of Words: An ABC of Quotations and Serendipity. Tobias has also published Obsessed by Dress, a collection of quotations concerning fashion.
In A World of Words Tobias presents an A to Z listing of "one or two words, from Animal to Zoo, which thematically connect one, two or three quotations," as a critic for Publishers Weekly explained it. These quotations, many taken from well-known poems, are accompanied by a full-page illustrations. Hazel Rochman in Booklist thought the book would be "great for reading aloud and sharing." The critic for Publishers Weekly concluded that it would be "savored by anyone who takes pleasure in the sound of words and the images they inspire."
In a series of brief examples accompanied by illustrations, Tobias explains the word serendipity in the book of the same title. Some examples include: "Serendipity is when you find out you actually look better in glasses." and "Serendipity is meeting a squirrel—and having a peanut in your pocket." the critic for Publishers Weekly believed that "most of [Tobias's] examples include a nice twist." A reviewer for Family Life called Serendipity a "happy ode to life's unexpected blessings."
Obsessed by Dress is a collection of quotations chosen by Tobias to provide witticisms and wisdom about fashion from such commentators as RuPaul, Franz Kafka, Samuel Butler, and Goethe. A critic for Publishers Weekly believed that "clothes horses of all stripes" will welcome Tobias's book. According to Matthew Link in the Advocate, Obsessed by Dress is "a mandatory tome."
