WELLSTONE, Paul (David) 1944-2002
OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born July 21, 1944, in Washington, DC; died in a plane crash October 25, 2002, near Eveleth, MN. Politician, educator, and author. Wellstone was a popular U.S. senator from Minnesota who was a staunch liberal Democrat at a time when his party was becoming more centrist. After earning his doctorate from the University of North Carolina in 1969, he embarked on a long academic career as a professor of political science at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. In 1990 he successfully ran for the U.S. Senate, and he was in the midst of a reelection campaign when his plane went down. Following his death his wife assumed his vacant congressional post. Wellstone was the author of three books: How the Rural Poor Got Power: Narrative of a Grassroots Organizer (1978), Powerline: The First Battle of America's Energy War (1981), cowritten with Barry M. Casper, and The Conscience of a Liberal: Reclaiming the Compassionate Agenda (2001).
