SIDELIGHTS: "I like to make people smile, and if I can make them laugh out loud, that's even better," author Dolores J. Wilson revealed on her Web site. Perhaps that's why in her debut novel, Big Hair and Flying Cows, she created the fun, wacky denizens of Sweet Meadow, Georgia.

Big Hair and Flying Cows features Bertie Byrd, whose life could be described as anything but ordinary. Bertie works at her father's auto repair shop, drives a tow truck that the residents of Sweet Meadow treat as a taxi, gets visited by the senile (and often naked) old man who used to live in her house, and lately has been receiving notes from a stalker who calls himself "Jack." When Bertie goes to the courthouse to apply for a permit to park her tow truck in her driveway, she discovers that the official notices instructing her to do so were signed by a dead man. Writing for School Library Journal, Erin Dennington observed, "Although Wilson's debut novel can sometimes seem over-the-top, it's still a wonderful read." Conveying a similar sentiment, a reviewer for Publishers Weekly called Big Hair and Flying Cows "an affectionate chronicle of one woman's discovery that commitment, support, and trust are closer than she thought."
