benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) n. brief episodes of rotatory vertigo precipitated by sudden head movements: a common cause of vertigo. It is thought to be due to microscopic debris in one of the semicircular canals (usually the posterior canal) and is treated by a predetermined set of head movements to move the debris.
