lesene. Vertical strip resembling a pilaster, but without a base or capital. It is a feature of Anglo-Saxon (e.g. Earls Barton church-tower, Northants. (early C10)) and Romanesque architecture. Anglo-Saxon lesenes were composed of bonding-stones (often long-and-short work) in rubble walls, and subdivided wall-surfaces into framed plastered panels. Also called stripwork
