STATE REGULATORY INFORMATION

In 1976 the Alaska State Legislature enacted statutes concerning the regulation of all postsecondary educational institutions and programs in Alaska. The overall purpose of that legislation is consumer protection and it specifically prohibits any person from operating a postsecondary educational institution, offering educational services or credentials or use the term "university or college" without express authority to do so granted by the State. The statute and pertinent regulations provide for an orderly and rigorous application process for all institutions seeking authority to operate and for all persons wishing to operate as institutional agents. Implementation and administrative authority for the statute is vested in the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.
