Description:
Independent, university, coed. Awards bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and first professional degrees and post-master's and first professional certificates. Founded 1867. Setting: 256-acre urban campus. Endowment: $371.2 million. Research spending 2003-04: $37 million. Total enrollment: 10,623. Faculty: 1,576 (1,126 full-time, 450 part-time). Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 8:1. 8,860 applied, 47% were admitted. 23% from top 10% of their high school class, 49% from top quarter, 81% from top half. 9 class presidents, 8 valedictorians, 30 student government officers. Full-time: 6,730 students, 67% women, 33% men. Part-time: 382 students, 63% women, 37% men. Collegiate Environment:
Orientation program. Drama-theater group, choral group, marching band, student-run newspaper, radio station. Social organizations: 150 open to all; national fraternities, national sororities, local fraternities; 2% of eligible men and 1% of eligible women are members. Most popular organizations: Howard University Student Association, Undergraduate Student Assembly, Campus Pals. Major annual events: homecoming, Spring Black Arts Festival, Residence Hall Week.
