Howard, Ann (b Norwood, 1936). Eng. mezzo-soprano. Début with WNO 1964 ( Azucena in Il trovatore), then joined SW. A noted Carmen for ENO from 1970. Amer. début New Orleans 1971; CG 1973. Created Leda in Bennett's The Mines of Sulphur (SW 1965), Mrs Danvers in Josephs's Rebecca (Opera North, 1983) and Elsie Worthing in Blake's The Plumber's Gift (ENO 1989). Sang Mescalina in f. Brit. p. of Ligeti's Le grand macabre (ENO 1982).
