Distance Learning Program

Kettering University's convenient and flexible graduate programs are available virtually anywhere through distance learning methods that include videotape, online video-streaming, CD-ROM, Internet/Web, and DVD. Kettering's distance learning is also supported by Blackboard.

Delivery Media

On-campus graduate courses are presented to students in a high-tech classroom/television studio on the Kettering campus to digitally capture the entire class presentation, lecture materials, case studies, question-answer sessions, and other contents presented. These class sessions are recorded onto videotapes, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and Internet video-streaming formats.

Distance learning students get the same class experience and materials that on-campus students receive, with out ever setting foot on campus. Since courses are recorded, distance learning students receive the course content/materials one week after on-campus students. Exams are proctored by a site coordinator or proctor assigned to a specific learning center.

Students can select the delivery format that best suits their or their learning center's needs. Kettering ships course materials (such as CDs, DVDs, and videotapes) to the assigned learning center on a weekly basis, or students can simply view their courses online through video-streaming. (Delivery of course materials for students with an independent status must be arranged with the Graduate Office.)

Programs of Study

Kettering University's Master of Science degree programs consist of ten core classes, totaling 40 credit hours. (This does not include any prerequisite courses that may apply for some programs.) Kettering designed the Master of Science programs to be terminal professional degrees for engineers, managers, and professionals. The programs are particularly attractive to working professionals who want to extend and broaden their related skills. Although designed as terminal degrees, they also provide preparation for study at the doctoral level.

Graduate students have up to six years to complete the degree requirements. The textbooks are free.

Kettering University also offers first-class graduate and continuing education programs that develop leaders for the real world. Designed for the working professional, Kettering's Master of Science programs are offered on campus as well as off campus through distance learning methods. Participating employers make Kettering's graduate programs available to their employees at more than 130 off-site learning centers around the world.

Kettering University's Master of Science degree programs include engineering, with concentrations available in automotive systems (on-campus only), CAE simulation, industrial engineering (on-campus only), manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering–lean manufacturing (on-campus only), mechanical cognate, and mechanical design; engineering management, with a concentration available in lean manufacturing (on-campus only); information technology; manufacturing management; manufacturing operations; and operations management. A new program in electrical engineering is planned to be available soon.

Credit Options

Credits are earned by completing courses; however, students may transfer up to 8 credit hours. Credit may be transferred for grades of B or better and is granted only for completed graduate study. Credit is not given for experience. Anyone interested in transfer credit should obtain an application for transfer credit from the Graduate Office.

Faculty

Kettering University's excellent faculty and staff members are truly committed to educating and preparing future leaders for a global workplace. The majority of the University's graduate programs are taught by nationally ranked faculty members who hold doctorate degrees in addition to having practical experience in their respective fields of study.

Professors announce office hours for students to clarify materials, ask questions, or obtain assistance. Students may contact professors during office hours via e-mail, phone or voice-mail, fax, or online bulletin boards.

Admission

Only students with at least a bachelor's degree are accepted into Kettering's graduate programs. A bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required for admission to any of the Master of Science in engineering degree programs. Two letters of recommendation are also required for engineering students as well as for the manufacturing operations program. Other requirements include a minimum 3.0 grade point average in undergraduate work and two supervisor recommendations. Certain other requirements must be met for some programs. The same requirements apply to on-campus and distance learning students.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition for graduate studies during the 2005–06 academic year is $590 per credit hour. There are no application or registration fees for U.S. applicants. There is a $50 application fee for international applicants.

Applying

Application deadlines are as follows: for the summer 2005 term, the deadline is June 13; for fall 2005, September 5; for winter 2006, December 19; and for spring 2006, March 6.
