enosis Greek Cypriot demand, originating in 1878, for political union with Greece, which post-1945 included a campaign of violence. In the late 1950s the Turks put forward a counter demand for partition of Cyprus, which they achieved by invasion in 1974. Enosis' greatest leader was Archbishop Makarios III.
