Cameron, Donald
Cameron, Donald (1695–1748). Jacobite. Cameron of Lochiel's grandfather had taken part in Glencairn's royalist rising in 1652 and fought for the Stuarts at Killiecrankie in 1689: his father was out in the '15 and attainted. When Prince Charles Edward landed at Moidart in 1745, Cameron was the first chief to whom he applied. He advised caution, but agreed to lead his clan to Glenfinnan, where it provided the bulk of Charles's small force. Lochiel took part in the march to Derby and was badly wounded at Culloden. Though he reached France with the prince in September 1746, he died after a few months in the French service. His brother Archibald, a physician, was out in the '45 with him and was hanged in 1753 when captured on a visit to Scotland.
