Chippenham, battle of, 878. Alfred's Wessex forces were encamped at Chippenham in north Wiltshire on 6 January 878 when they were routed by a surprise attack from a Danish army at Gloucester, led by Guthrum. Alfred was forced into hiding in the marshes of Somerset.
