Degeangli
Degeangli. Indigenous British tribe of the Iron Age and Roman periods whose territory covered much of northern Wales. They were the northern neighbours of the Ordovices. Responding to the tribal uprisings instigated by the British chief Caratacus, the governor P. Ostorius Scapula attacked the Ordovices and Silures and crushed the first Icenian revolt of ad 47; he then marched north-westwards into lowland Cheshire and on into the territory of the Degeangli. The Degeangli were cut off from the powerful Brigantes of Yorkshire and subdued. The tribe was incorporated into the province of Britannia and became a civitas (tribal administrative district).
