Vereeniging, treaty of
Vereeniging, treaty of. This brought the second Boer war to a close. At the beginning of May 1902 the Boers agreed to treat for ‘limited independence’. On the 31st at Vereeniging in southern Transvaal they accepted Britain's final offer: that they stop fighting and declare themselves subjects of King Edward VII, in return for which they would get their lands back, with compensation for buildings and crops that had been destroyed; be allowed the use of their language in schools and law courts; and be given self-government as soon as possible, with a racist franchise if that was what they really desired.
