Sussex, West was given a separate county council in 1888, with its county headquarters at Chichester, and the arrangement was continued in 1972. The Banham commission in 1994 recommended no change in the two-tier system for West Sussex, which retains its county status. See Sussex, East.

West Sussex Non-metropolitan county in se England. It is divided into seven districts: Chichester (the county town), Adur, Arun, Crawley, Horsham, Mid-Sussex, and Worthing. Area: 2016sq km (778sq mi). Pop. (1997) 760,700.
