Cisplatine War
Cisplatine War
Cisplatine War, struggle between Uruguayan patriots and the Brazilian army of occupation between 1825 and 1828. In April 1825, thirty-three Uruguayan patriots, led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, crossed the river from Buenos Aires at night to rally their countrymen against the Brazilian army. In an effort to enlarge their efforts, the band of thirty-three leaders gathered around them groups of fighting gauchos. For three years, a few thousand Uruguayans successfully harassed the Brazilian regiments in Uruguay. In 1828 British mediation brought Brazilian recognition of independent Uruguay and an end to the war.
