Felguérez, Manuel (1928–)

Manuel Felguérez (b. 12 December 1928), Mexican artist. Born in San Agustín Valparaíso, Zacatecas, Felguérez is one of the most important exponents of abstract art in Mexico. From 1947 to 1952 he lived in Paris, studying at the Academy of the Grande Chaumière; he also studied sculpture with Ossip Zadkine and Constantin Brancusi. Upon his return to Mexico City in 1953, he studied with Francisco Zúñiga. Felguérez's work includes a number of highly abstract sculptures, stained glass, and murals that he created with found objects. Most of his geometric paintings preserve figurative elements pointing to the dualism between order and disorder that characterizes his entire oeuvre. Felguérez has also worked as a set designer for such plays as La lección (1961) and Laópera del orden (1961), directed by Alexandro Jodorowsky. His work has been the subject of numerous individual and group exhibitions in Mexico and Europe. The Museo Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez in Zacatecas, named for the artist, honors his great contribution to abstract art.
