Simón Tadeo Ortiz de Ayala (b. 18 October 1788; d. 18 October 1833), Mexican entrepreneur and diplomat. Born in Mascota, Jalisco, Ortiz de Ayala visited Spain, where in 1810 he became a champion of independence and initiated a decade of travels in search of aid for his country that took him to the United States, much of South America, and England. In 1822 he published Resumen de la estadística del Imperio Mexicano.
After a mission to Guatemala in 1822, Ortiz de Ayala became a land speculator in Texas as well as in Coatzacoalcos in the south. Although he developed a number of schemes to colonize both areas, none was successful. While the Mexican consul in Bordeaux he published another important analysis, México considerado como nación independiente y libre (1832).
