Ortiz, Cristina (1950—)
Brazilian pianist who is highly acclaimed for her recordings of Heitor Villa-Lobos and other Brazilian composers. Born in Bahia, Brazil, on April 17, 1950.
Cristina Ortiz studied first in Brazil and then in Paris with Magda Tagliaferro ; advanced studies took place later with Rudolf Serkin. In 1969, she was the winner of the Van Cliburn Competition. Her successful New York recital debut took place in 1971, and by the mid-1970s she had launched an international touring career. Specializing in the works of French composers, Ortiz also made highly acclaimed recordings of the compositions of Heitor Villa-Lobos and other Brazilian composers.
