Tinajero Martínez de Allen, Eugenia

The writer Eugenia Tinajero Martínez de Allen has unjustly been left out of Latin American literary history despite her importance to both the tradicionista and indigenista movements. Much like Ricardo Palma, Tinajero Martínez deals with many periods and settings in her writing. What sets her apart from other authors is the distinctly Ecuadorian flavor of her legends. If Peruvian legends and tradiciones tend to center on Cuzco, for Tinajero Martínez Quito provides a basis for Ecuadorian nationalist literature. Her use of Quito not only counterbalances Peruvian legends but also those of the Incas; some of her stories focus on the Schiris, a pre-Inca group that may or may not have existed but appears frequently in folklore.
