Margaret Osborne duPont, 1918–2012, American tennis player, b. Joseph, Oreg. Known for her aggressive play and endurance, she was one of the finest female players in the mid-20th cent. Ranked number one among women from 1947 through 1950, she won a total of 37 Grand Slam titles, 31 of them in doubles play. With her most frequent doubles partner, Louise Brough, she won 20 titles; the two were undefeated in U.S. doubles matches for nine years (1942–50), a Grand Slam record. DuPont also won six Grand Slam singles titles—Wimbledon (1947) and the French (1946, 1949) and U.S. national championships (1948–50).
