Shelbyville:1 City (1990 pop. 15,336), seat of Shelby co., central Ind., in a rich corn and livestock area; platted 1822, inc. as a city 1860. A farm-trade center, it manufactures glass, metal, and plastic products; furniture; transportation equipment; and machinery. 2 City (1990 pop. 14,049), seat of Bedford co., central Tenn., on the Duck River, in a farm and timber area; inc. 1819. Wood products, clothing, plastics, and transportation equipment are manufactured. The region is noted for the breeding of the Tennessee Walking Horse. Shelbyville was one of the country's early planned cities; many of its 19th-century buildings remain.
