Sorabji, Cornelia

Cornelia Sorabji (sōräb´jē), c.1870–1954, Indian lawyer and author. She took a law degree at Oxford in 1893. She served (1904–23) as a special legal adviser to the Court of Wards of Bengal, Bihar, Orissa (now Odisha), and Assam; in this office, which was created through her efforts, she was responsible for the interests of women property holders who lived in purdah. In 1923 she was called to the English bar, but continued to practice in India. She was in favor of continued British rule, and in later years lived in London. Her writings include Love and Life behind the Purdah (1901), Sun Babies (1904; 2d series, 1909), Indian Tales of the Great Ones (1916), The Purdahnashin (1917), Therefore (1924), and India Recalled (1936).
