DAMASUS

A native of Hungary, not of Bohemia or Italy as has been frequently asserted; fl. beginning of 13th century. He taught Canon Law and wrote his works at Bologna. Little else is known of his life. The following works are known: (1) Glosses on the Decretum of gratian, not enough to constitute a formal apparatus. (2) Apparatus to the first two Compilationes Antiquae, with two recensions, one before and the other after the Compilatio IV; they include a great number of Tancred's glosses. (3) Apparatus to Compilatio III, which has not yet been found. (4) Apparatus to the constitutions of the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), which is subsequent to that of vincent of spain. (5) Glosses on the tree of consanguinity. (6) Quaestiones, written probably before the Fourth Lateran Council. (7) Summa titulorum, prior, perhaps, to the same council. (8) Brocarda or Brocardica, the only printed work (ed. Lyons 1519, Milan 151621, Cologne 1564, Venice 1584 in the Tractatus Universi Iuris v.18 fol. 506512). Works (4) and (5) will appear in Monumenta Iuris Canonici of the Gratian Institute. A Historiae super librum decretorum and an Ordo Iudiciarius were attributed to him, but with very little probability. Although Damasus is an important author, little research has been done on his writings.
