SYNGALOWSKI, ARON
SYNGALOWSKI, ARON (1890–1956), a leader of *ort. Born in a village near Baranovichi, Belorussia, at the age of 16 he joined the Jewish Socialist territorialist movement, in which he became known as a brilliant orator under the name "Aron Czenstochover." Shortly before World War I he moved to Germany. In 1920, David *Lvovich, a childhood friend, together with Leon *Bramson, arrived in Berlin representing Russian ort. From that time onward Syngalowski devoted himself to the growth and development of that organization. In 1921, when the World ort Union was organized in Berlin, he became vice chairman of the executive committee, and after Bramson's death, in 1941, he became chairman of the executive committee. Credit for the reconstruction of the ort network after World War ii and the establishment of its activities in Israel in 1948 is due largely to Syngalowski. He died in Paris and was buried in Geneva. The ort school in Tel Aviv was named after him.
