Platycephalidae (flathead; subclass Actinopterygii, order Scorpaeniformes) A family of marine fish that have a distinctly depressed or flattened body, large mouth, flat head with the eyes located on top, and pectoral fins that project sideways. Many species are attractively coloured, and often well camouflaged when lying on the sea-bottom. There are about 55 species, occurring in the Indo-Pacific region.
