potential instability
potential instability(convective instability) An atmospheric condition in which otherwise stable air would become unstable if forced to rise (e.g. over high ground) thereby reaching its saturation point. Large cumulus with much precipitation often results from the forced uplifting of such air. See also instability and stability.
