Georgy Timiofeyevich Dobrovolsky

1928-1971

Soviet cosmonaut who commanded the first crew to live aboard a space station. Dobrovolsky acted as communications officer for manned Soyuz flights between 1967-69, and trained for the abortive Soviet moon landing program. He transferred to the Salyut space station program in 1970 and, with Viktor Patsayev and Vladislav Volkov, spent 23 days aboard the Salyut 1 station in 1971. He died, along with his crew, when the spacecraft returning them to Earth depressurized.
